The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
