In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
