Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
