British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
